Southern Africa for the Adventure Junkie

Adrenaline is something that can play a role in helping us make a decision on where to take our next holiday. Many people could choose Disneyland because of the rollercoasters, or running with the bulls in Spain, but southern Africa has all the adventure one could pack into one holiday to last a lifetime. The area is made up of countries that all carry their own unique features and also display a variation of climates. They also prove to be very affordable destinations for foreigners which only opens up more doors for an action packed vacation.

The first country you need to visit is South Africa, not because I am going in any order but if flying from afar you’ll most probably need to fly into Johannesburg International Airport, as it is the airport with the most connectivity in southern Africa. Johannesburg is a massive city that forms the financial hub of South Africa. Most activities here happen at night, and will often take you to one of the big casinos. Because online gaming sites such as MobileCasinoCanada.ca aren’t popular in South Africa people flood to the land based casinos meaning cinemas, theatres, restaurants and nightlife can all be found in one of Joburgs big casinos.

From Johannesburg you have perfect access to all the most prestigious wildlife parks, including South Africa’s prized possession in the Kruger National Park. There is literally no African animal you cannot see here, and most visitors are fortunate in seeing the ‘Big 5’; Lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhino. The conventional way to view game is to hitch a lift on a game vehicle which slowly tours through the bush, stumbling upon wildlife as it goes. However, for the keen beans there is also the possibility on a guided walking tour through the unknown, where close unguarded encounters will animals really gets the blood pumping.

Beside the Kruger there are other fantastic game viewing locations. Many people opt for the resort style experience of Sun City, where adventure meets luxury and extreme comfort. As well as offering wildlife experiences the resort also has a superb water park with nerve testing slides, as well as a man-made beach with artificially generated waves. Golfers will find the no. 1 ranked course in the country on the resort, while casual strollers can delve into a host of casinos, restaurants, theatres, sports, tours and many more. It is a resort that has an activity for everyone and ensures you’ll never be bored.

South Africa has always had a really strong surfing culture, and although Jeffrey’s Bay is famous for being featured in The Endless Summer, and the place where Australian surfer Mick Fanning recently fended off a shark on live TV, it is really famous among surfers for the most amazing right break waves found on the planet. The atmosphere in this town located in the Eastern Cape of South Africa delivers a brilliant time and offers the chance to really learn about surfing. Moving onto a place that has a more broad selection of sights and activities, one would be wise to check out the beautiful city of Cape Town. You would be hard pressed to find a traveller who has visited this city and had an average time. The sight of a city using Table Mountain as a backdrop with the turquoise Atlantic ocean laid out in front is one of the most unique sights in the world, and surely a favourite photo in many a foreigners album.

This might be a city of scenery but it is also definitely a city of adventure. As the city is also surrounded by sea it means a lot of beaches and surf. There are countless surfing schools to catch a lesson, and big waves are never hard to come by. As the city is on the base of a mountain there are also countless mountain activities such as mountain biking, hiking, abseiling, rock climbing, paragliding and a whole host more. One of the most popular activities that draw adventure seekers to the region is shark cage diving. False Bay, which lies on the southern coast of Cape Town is one of the largest great white shark breading grounds in the world, and people have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the ocean’s most dangerous predator. If this still isn’t extreme enough for you the try out skydiving. The view from above is exquisite while you free fall to earth at 250 km/h.

South Africa is an awesome playground, but there are a few other countries you really should see. Namibia is one in particular. Made famous as the country where Angelina Jolie chose to give birth to her daughter Shiloh, it is a land with vast expanses of red sanded desert terrain. This might not be appealing to some but the 4×4 trips through the sand dunes of Sossusvlei are quite spectacular. Tours can also be done on quad bikes where the real fun happens. The views are some of the most breathe taking you will ever see, especially the iconic scene of antelope walking in tandem along the sand dunes. Bike trails through the country are also popular, and there is no shortage of wildlife. Etosha National park in the north of the country makes it possible for you to be in the very heart of the African bush. Namibia is all about experiencing land that feels completely untouched, and getting as deep into nature as you ever will. Star gazing at night will make you feel as if you can reach out and touch the stars as they shine so brightly.

Moving to the eastern side of southern Africa lies the tropical country of Mozambique. Here the adventure all lies on the Indian Ocean, where the water is warm and as clear as your swimming pool. A great experience can be found in the north of the country, specifically the Portuguese Island. The term ‘tropical paradise’ best describes this Island and cruises around it are easy to find at any time of the year. Kite surfing is highly popular in Mozambique and although intimidating at first it quickly becomes an addiction and make windsurfing a long lost memory. There are also frequent tours taking people out from most places in search of dolphins. If you’ve ever had the chance to swim and play with these friendly guys then you’ll know just how much fun it is.

Going back to the more extreme, this takes you to the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia on the Zambezi River. Here white water rafting is the name of the game and it is sure to get your eyes as big as saucers when you come upon the first rapid. Light training is given before the voyage if you have no prior experience, but make sure to wear sun screen as the African rays are no laughing matter. While in the area also be sure to view the Victoria Falls. These falls don’t form part of the river rafting for obvious reasons but are quite the sight when standing nearby. A bunch of resorts lie within the vicinity of the falls which all offer a wide selection of activities, and being Africa wildlife viewing is always on the table.

There really is no other place in the world like it. Everything has a different feel and smell in the southern area of Africa, and well as a mystique that cannot be rivalled. However, the adventure aspect is one that brings a fun factor that makes a return trip almost guaranteed one day.
