Free champagne, VIP suites, helicopter shuttles… who wouldn’t want to travel like a rock star? Unfortunately, perks like these tend to be reserved for, well, rock stars. But for those of us who lack the required talent, there’s still hope. A little research can deliver big results, especially if you’re realistic about choosing what really matters most to you.
So before you start shopping through lists of luxury vacation home rentals, decide what’s most important to your rock star fantasy fulfillment, and focus your energy there. If you can’t decide, the list below should help.
1. Act As If
Let’s start with a general but tremendously important tip: confidence. Smile and be nice to everyone, but give the impression at all times that you are SOMEBODY and deserve to be coddled. People who work in the service industries will definitely pick up on this, and you will be treated accordingly (tipping generously doesn’t hurt, either).
2. Make Eccentric Demands
When booking your hotel reservation, make a silly (but reasonable) request. You may have to pay a little extra, but it says a lot when you show up and find one red balloon and a bowl of fresh kumquats in your room, exactly as your contract demanded.
3. Go Incognito
Check into your hotel with a fake name. Traveling like a rock star is all in the details, and a good indication is when your friends call the hotel and have to ask for Captain Kirk to get you.
4. Dine Like Rock Royalty
Research the best restaurants in town to find out where the jet set dines. Even if you can’t get a reservation until 10:00pm, you can sit at the bar and mingle. Enter with confidence, and be very nice to the host or hostess.
5. Party Like Rock Royalty
This goes for bars and nightclubs too – do your research, and make sure you tip the doorman appropriately. Shoot for a combination of politeness and confidence.
6. Dress to Impress
Look the part. Rock stars don’t dress like normal people, so pick a fashion icon or two and start planning your wardrobe. Extraordinary appearance gets you extraordinary treatment.
7. Have an Entourage
Never go anywhere alone. Rock stars always roll with an entourage of fans, groupies, and miscellaneous hangers-on. So should you. If you’re with friends, you can take turns being the “star” of the group.
8. Make Friends
Make as many friends as possible. You never know who knows whom, and being extra friendly just might get you an invitation to the rock star party of the year.
9. Get a Driver
If you’re going to any sort of high profile party or event, be sure to hire a driver. No self-respecting rock star would ever show up to such a place driving his own car, no matter how nice it is. A chauffeured car is key, even if it isn’t a limousine.
10. Travel in Class
Finally, it must be said – use your frequent flyer miles and upgrade that ticket to first class. Make sure you take full advantage of this by having a drink or two in the airline’s first class lounge before your flight.
